Featuring big steam power in the USA with Nickel Plate Berkshire No. 765 a massive 2-8-4, Norfolk and Western J No. 611 a streamlined 4-8-4 (the world's most powerful 4-8-4), and Norfolk and Western A No. 1218 a 2-6-6-4 which is the world's most powerful operating steam loco. All are on special passenger trains, and the steam in the cold air is most spectacular.
The cameras have captured a range of views including lineside, pacing alongside, from above, from the train, good clear views in the cab, and good close-ups of the running gear and items like the coal being spread in the firebox by the steam jets of the automatic stoker.
One of the passenger trains has on the rear a lovely old verandah type observation car. The trains are seen running through quite picturesque country in the autumn with beautiful autumn tones, and in the spring with the trees in blossom, in both country and in towns with typical American timber houses. Locations include the Appalachian Valley, Applachian Mts, Hills of Georgia and Blue Ridge Mountains. The 2-6-6-4 is also seen during its rebuild, and on its first run after rebuild. Commentary, in an English accent, is clear and concise.
