Produced by Frameline Film and Television for Sandstone Steam Railroad Company. The video of the event of the century.
April 9th, 10th and 11th 1999 were extraordinary days in the Eastern Free State. A celebration of huge proportions took place. It is the centenary of the Anglo-Boer War; it was the final year of the current millennium, and a Guinness Book of Records world attempt was made to establish the greatest number of diverse antique machines ploughing on the same land at the same time. Plus, a fully restored narrow gauge railway was making its inaugural trip along 7 kilometres of newly laid 2ft gauge track, to the delight of the visitors who came along for the ride.
All this, and more, was captured on professionally recorded video and the results are yours to enjoy. The full programme runs for a spellbinding 90 minutes, with aerial views, interviews from the experts and a glorious insight into the workings of such an ambitious, superbly managed and exciting event. Supported by local and many international visitors, the Great 100 Working is a celebration of all that is great about the vintage and veteran agricultural machinery movement in South Africa.
At Sandstone Estates, the site of the Great 100 Working, a special 2ft narrow gauge service was inaugurated for the benefit of visitors to the event and linking up with the national rail network at Kommandonek, giving travellers the opportunity of joining the fully restored main line steam locos which travel along 300km of line through the glorious Eastern Free State countryside. These splendid trains, together with an outstanding collection of veteran, vintage and classic tractors, steam engines, automobiles, commercial vehicles and stationary engines are all featured in the Great 100 Working video.
This videotape is superb in all respects. There is excellent coverage of the event, top camera work and clear dialogue. The tractors seen, range from 1909 to 1999. We see the railway being laid and the Garratt being delivered, and running. The substantial earthworks for the railway are amazing. The 3'6" gauge train is hauled by a 4-8-4. Included is just about every kind of vehicle imaginable, trench digger, vintage trucks, buses, and even a restored Messerschmitt 3 wheel car, plus some aircraft and models.
We have no hesitation in rating the video as picture quality A.
