Highlights of five special passenger trains in New Zealand, led by beautiful 4-8-2 type J1211 and JA1250, either singly or double heading. Scenes from the lineside, pacing and the occasional in cab view. Brief but adequate commentary is kept clear of the loco sounds. There is no music.
The videotape opens with non-streamlined J 1211 and NB 1939 between Opua and Kawakawa, in a variety of locations from street running to city and waterside scenery. On the occasion of the opening of the extension of the Glenbrook Railway to Waiuku, JA 1250 and diesel DA 529 are featured in several scenes both town and country. JA 1250 works a promotional train between Auckland and Whangarei. A 4-8-2 on just 2 cars a van and "spares" wagon makes for some exciting acceleration. There are good lineside and pacing shots. JA 1250 and diesel DC 4444 next take an excursion to Mt Maunganui. A truly memorable scene is that of the whole train reflected in the mirror-like waters af a lineside lake, followed by a good variety of scenes along the line.
Streamlined Js were once common, but alas not any more. J 1211 was therefore fitted with streamlining, manufactured to the original drawings, and is captured at work on the Glenbrook Railway. Non-streamlined and streamlined Mountains combine to move 2 water tanks, 11 cars and a van on a trip to Rotorua, where alas the station no longer has passenger trains, the rails having been removed. The turntable remains, and is used to turn the locos. There is a good variety of runpasts.
Recorded and mastered on SVHS tape. Good camera work. PQ. B
