A comprehensive videotape of mostly diesel hauled regular trains in the South Island of New Zealand. Diesel classes are DF, DJ, DC, DG, DSC, TR and E0, hauling the Coastal Pacific Express between Picton and Christchurch, the Tranzalpine Express between Christchurch and Greymouth, Westport - Greymouth unit coal trains, work train, and regular freights. There are views from lineside, on board and in the cab, running through the scenery for which new Zealand is famous including rugged mountains, in the snow, over spindly steel bridges and one timber truss, tunnels and fields.
There is a segment on the electric locos moving normally diesel hauled trains through the Otira tunnel (where the diesel locos otherwise overheat), another on the unloading of coal trains either automatically, or by mechanical grabs, or both. Other segments look briefly at Shantytown at Greymouth with its Climax, Ferrymead with its Dunedin tram and Vulcan railcar, Weka Pass Railway where the train is hauled one way through spectacular scenery, then propelled back using a single ended full body style diesel loco, the crew driving by their rear vision mirror!
Streamlined J 4-8-2 makes a spectacular appearance hauling a train through Arthurs Pass, probably the most scenic area of New Zealand.
Good camera work, no music, recorded and mastered on SVHS. PQ B
