In the sixties, when steam was still around on NSW railways, George Meyer, a well known American rail photographer, visited Australia to capture the scene on that superb film format, 16mm. His film covered Sydney and the area around Fassifern and Newcastle on 16mm colour.
This 16mm film, professionally transferred by "flying spot scanner" to broadcast standard tape, and edited on one inch (the best possible method) is the basis of this videotape.
Featured on this tape are the goods and coal trains of the era, (including 4 wheelers), Newcastle Expresses and the end-loading wooden suburban cars, with a variety of locos from the smallest to the biggest, together with loco yards, alive with steam locos.
See in glorious colour:- Sydney's Darling Harbour goods yard, now long since gone, being shunted by 19 class 0-6-0s 1924, 1952, 1919 and 3026 tender type 4-6-0. 60 class 4-8-4+4-8-4 Garratts, single and double, or banked by 59 class 2-8-2. 59 class 2-8-2. Standard goods 2-8-0 locos of the 50 and 53 classes. 38 class 4-6-2s 3813 in green and black, 3820 and 3822 in black, 30 class 4-6-4 tank locos on locals. 1957 0-6-0 pushing 4 wheel coal hoppers up a coal stage.
Relive the days of Hexham, R.O.D, Kitson and 10 class locos and even a rail trike. Watch 2 car diesel, including a 6 car set, and a diesel hauled Newcastle Express with three locos up front, 44, 45 and 44. Catch glimpses of a bright and shiny electric loco 4637, a "Bradfield" Parcel Van, single deck interurban, Red single and double deck electric, Sydney Station, and even brief views of the "Southern Aurora" train.
