Airborne Magic Volume 2

Railway Panorama No3

On 28 October 1989, 4-6-2 Flying Scotsman and 4-6-0 3642 headed south along the picturesque main southern line to Moss Vale on the NSW Southern Highlands, with the unusual arrangement of 3642 leading. Our camera caught the train at various locations between Picton and Moss Vale, then on the connecting line between Robertson and Moss Vale with 3642 alone, and again double heading on the return run at Bowral.

Next, two 4-6-2s as Flying Scotsman and 3801 are captured double heading heavy special trains in the Sydney suburbs at Beecroft, Wentworth Park, Meadowbank and Boronia No1 tunnel.

We move then to Cowra, where the Lachlan Valley Railway has leased the former Cowra - Forbes line, and 4-6-0 No. 3026 heads a passenger train from Cowra Station to Holmwood, with some very hard work starting on the grade from Caravan City. To continue our look at Lachlan Valley Railway, we move to the loco depot at Cowra, now Lachlan Valley's home, where former pay bus FP13 is turned on the turntable, then taken for a run, and former Australian Iron and Steel D9 English Electric diesel loco, a B B type with side rods, shunts the yard and gives us a cab ride.

Caravan City is a four star caravan park at Cowra, built with a railway theme, and in Nov 1989 a rail trike and quad rally was held, commencing from Caravan City, and travelling to Woodstock and return. We cover the quads and trike both petrol and hand, in Caravan City, and out along the line. After a brief look at Wyangala Dam and Cowra's magnificent rose and Japanese gardens, we take a good look at the substantial iron bridge over the Lachlan River at Cowra, with four 48 class branchline diesels on a wheat train crossing the 1886 structure. Next a 48 brings in a short wheat train from the Eugowra branch, by way of the manual level crossing gates.

The video concludes with a brief look at Sydney's vintage electric train operating on the Cronulla line, as 80 and 422 class diesels head a train of open wagons.

Taken on professional Betacam, edited on 1" tape. PQA.
