Driver's View to Kandos

Few lines are more picturesque than the Mudgee Line and fortunately some of the better parts are in the section still open, albeit for freight only, between Wallerawang and the entrance to the Kandos cement works.
Rail motor 402, now being used as a radio test vehicle, is our means of transport. We first travel North from Wallerawang, passing the site of former Portland station, Baal Bone Colliery junction to Ben Bullen where we go into the siding to cross a cement train hauled by a pair of 80 class Alco powered units.
It is getting late as we head onward and as the sun sets its last rays illuminate some of the rocky outcrops for which this line is famous (this night segment has been edited to show only highlights). Soon the rail motor's headlight shines on cuttings and tunnel walls, eerily illuminates the Brogans Creek water columns (remnants of the days of steam) and the semaphore at Clandulla. Trackside lights at Charbon Junction reminiscent of garden lights, and the arrival at the entrance to Kandos cement works marks the end of the present line.
A break is taken here to view the aerial ropeway that supplies the Kandos cement works with limestone. The trip from Ben Bullen to Clandulla is now retraced in daylight with the glorious rock outcrops cliff faces, rock cuttings, tunnel portals and Brogans Creek remnants fully illuminated.The return South features some of the beautiful scenery for which the area is famous and at Ben Bullen we take the siding to allow a Ballast Train to pass with Alco power in the form of a pair of 80 class.
In addition to the view from the driver's cab, there are interior views of the radio test railmotor, lineside views of the railmotor (and the passing trains) between Wallerawang and Ben Bullen, at Ben Bullen Station, Capertee Station and on Lithgow Viaduct. PQ A.
