Four beautifully preserved East German steam locomotives on regular trains around Saalfeld. Delightful views, good steam effects, interesting trains and locos.
In 1989 the German Reichsbahn (East Germany) allowed four preserved steam locos to return to their former duties for a few days in the Saalfeld region just north of the southern border, about 50 kM south east of Erfurt. 1926 vintage three cylinder 2-10-0 No. 44 1093 on a 1600 tonne goods train is the first feature on this videotape, commencing in the early morning, and followed through to clear daylight, in a series of views lineside and in the cab.
A few hours later, a modern BO BO class 243 electric loco moves off its train from behind the delightful signal box at Camburg, and is replaced by semi streamlined 4-6-2 01 1531, which departs in bright sunlight on a heavy passenger train. Good views are had of the train from every angle and inside the cab, through towns and alongside a river. At Saalfeld 2-10-2T 95 027 double heads 44 1093 on a heavy freight with lots of 4 wheelers in the consist. There are several views from good vantage points. 2-6-0T No. 74 1230 built in 1916 is seen next working hard on a small passenger train up a most picturesque valley, in a sequence of splendid views.
At Langenorla Ost we are treated to a series of scenes that are like pages from the past with all the little details from the steam age still intact and well maintained. The connecting train at Orlamunde is hauled by 01 1531, which is seen departing. 2-10-0 No. 44 1093 is serviced in the large roundhouse at Orlamunde, and 74 1230 is given attention. Soon the Pacific passes on its passenger train. As soon as the passenger has departed, the 2-10-0 arrives on a goods.
While awaiting the departure of the little 2-6-0, good close-ups are shown of very old station equipment and other railroadiana, all part of an (almost) byegone age. The 2-6-0 departs, and is followed along the valley, through little villages to Possneck, the terminus of the steam train. The videotape concludes with two beautiful scenes. The first is of the 2-10-0 running alongside a river with a goods train, then the Pacific on a string of double deck passenger cars. PQ A.
