Airborne Magic Volume 2

Lisbon and its Trams

The video opens with a brief look at the city of Lisbon, from a vantage point in the hills above, while the commentary gives us a brief history. Then glimpses of beautiful wrought or cast iron street lamp brackets and old tiled walls. Next to a depot where we see the motor bogies and general views of a class MV115 four wheeler, some of which date back to 1926, and a class GE59 with maximum traction bogies, built between 1900 and 1935. The System has 200 or so trams on 14 routes with some of the four wheelers modernised in 1950 and some with trailer. There are excellent close-ups of the 580v overhead wiring, interior views showing unusual twin handwheel brakes, trams circling a delightful fountain, historic tram No.2, restored to its as-built 1901 condition and a track cleaner tram. See the trams in many locations making their way along cobbled streets, between buildings, old and magnificent, or old and quaint, with a grade of 1 in 7 on one route. A failure of one of the two motors in a tram causes quite a procession.

There are night shots in very narrow streets including a manually operated kerosene colour light signal! There is gauntlet track, including one section only about 3 metres long! See a worker shovelling sand out of the track groove with special shovel, single blade points and a depot visit. All this plus 3 funicular railways, and a most unusual cast iron tower housing lifts.

Taken on an Electronic News Gathering camera, edited to one inch and directly duplicated here in Australia. PQ A
