ICE (Intercity Express) was designed and developed in Germany to relieve the overburdened air and highway systems, resulting in a fast and comfortable service between major German cities, on specially built lines with very wide radius curves, but using regular lines at lower speed in the cities. In this videotape we follow the progress of development of the train from it's early days with the streamlined locos hauling regular cars, through to the finished complete trains travelling at high speed through the beautiful countryside, and more sedately through the built up areas and main stations.
There are glimpses of 1940s commuter trains near Berlin, the famous Wuppertal suspended monorail, regular suburban trains and interior of Hamburg signal box with a fabulous control panel. One segment takes us through the service centre for the ICE with fairly comprehensive coverage. Another gives us a good description of the operation of the train from the driver's cab. Camera locations include line side, inside the cars, the view ahead from the driver's cab and a short segment from a plane.
The final segment on the tape covers the demonstration trip to USA, for which the ICE was lettered "Amtrak". We see the ICE travelling through the USA, albeit at much lower than it's designed speed because of unsuitable track, with side views of the US scenery and other regular trains. Picture quality A.
