The Harzquerbahn is one of the World's most famous narrow gauge railways. The period covered is 1991-92, (before privatization and consequent replacement of most steam passenger trains by diesel railcars and transfer of local freight to road trucks) and Harzquerbahn is operating with heavy steam locos, quite massive for metre gauge, between Wernigerode and Nordhausen, with a branch to the top of Mount Brocken. Join us in a splendid journey across the whole railway, with absolutely magnificent lineside scenes of the trains especially in the pine forests of the Harz Mountains, which are particularly spectacular in the winter segment, with a mantle of snow and the white steam rising to the heavens
The trains are also featured running along the streets of Wernigerode, in both winter snow and in the summer, sharing the street with cars, toboggans and pedestrians, and several spectacular scenes of two trains running parallel. Another interesting segment covers the "Rollbok" where standard gauge goods wagons are transferred ingeniously to narrow gauge carrying bogies. Also "Rollwagons" where whole standard gauge wagons are transported on low built narrow gauge open frame wagons. There are cab rides with well lit views in the driver's cab, a look inside the workshops and views of loco coaling and servicing.
All trains are worked by tank locos, mostly chunky 2-10-2s, but the occasional 0-6-0 and 0-4-4-0 Mallet appear too.
