Brig is a junction of three standard gauge railways, and the video opens with a brief look at representative trains of each system, a 7 car BLS express bringing tourists to Brig, followed by the departure of a Swiss Federal Railway's latest class RE4/4/4 in red paint with "Rail 2000" emblazoned on its flank, and a representative of the BLS in its brown paint scheme at the station.
There is a brief view of a TEE set arriving, then the video moves to the narrow gauge station where the Furka Oberalp meets the BVZ, with various locos and train sets described. A veteran F.O. HG4/4 on a train of red and white cars passes two sisters in the narrow gauge depot. The HG4/4s have now been virtually replaced by more modern locos. The BVZ is soon represented by another veteran, a 1929 vintage GE4/4.
The camera moves to a postion along the line where the BVZ parallels the State system where are seen an intercity train, followed by a pair of BVZ railcars towing 4 trailers on the adjacent metre gauge. The video continues with BVZ trains of all kinds in every conceivable location in scenery for which Switzerland is famous. There are also excellent close-ups of the loco's interesting bogies with their rack pinions, seen engaging rack, a well-filmed cab ride in the steeple cab loco, including interior views, and good views of the lovely station buildings. Electric loco sounds, too, are captured on board and lineside, and train crossings at stations show a variety of trains including push-pull, and there is a work train involved in rail replacement duty. After arrival at Zermatt, we leave the green fields and join the connecting 3 phase AC operated Gornergrat rack railway with 1:5 grades up into the snow country, with breathtaking lineside views of the train and the famous Matterhorn as a majestic backdrop.
