Since 1990 Rex Shephard has been filming railway events across Tasmania, this first video in the series allows you to enjoy part of what Rex has experienced over those nine years.
The video begins with a Dubs 8 locomotive traveling along Tasmania's north west coast between Don River Railway and Burnie, in the first revenue mainline excursion for more than thirty years. Australian transport Network (Tasrail) had some refurbished DQ class locomotives in Hobart in early 1999 much to the delight of rail enthusiasts in southern Tasmania. The camera was in position to witness these locomotives stalling on the approach to Rhyndaston tunnel.
The Derwent Valley railway features with their 'H class' steam locomotive on one of their open days along with an even older 'X class' English electric locomotive. A now removed branchline is the venue, where we head up the picturesque Derwent valley line toward Mt Field National park on a spirited run in 1992.
The ABT railway on Tasmania's west coast has attracted much interest of late, now the reconstruction will begin in the final weeks of this year 1999. We have a short colour film with sound of that railway in 1962 just months before the final closure. A video shot in 1998 by Wolf Friedersdorff shows the rugged beauty of the ABT line ... today.
Good camera work, nice variety and all shot from a tripod. GM fans will love the sound of 5 of them on one train! A contrast is the 6 cylinder English Electric X classes. Steam fans are well catered for too. Taken on a good quality SVHS camera. PQ B.
